Making money with your iPhone apps is possible by using many different tactics.
By reading this guide you will get some new ideas! These tips can be applied to both paid and free apps. Use some caution and be clear about it in the description if you decide to use some of these tips on a paid app. You can use more than one of the tips!

Making money with your iPhone apps

1. Sponsor products or services with your app

You should know the target audience of your app. If you do, it will be easy to find products or services they would be interested in. Contact companies that offers those products or services and propose a deal.

An app targeted to runners could get a sponsorship from Nike or Asics. They could simply want their logo at the bottom of the screen, or perhaps an ad displaying their new shoe model. The ad should be marked as sponsored content, this is important since your users shouldn’t feel like your deceiving them.

You can also sponsor other apps they might be interested in. Obviously not your competition but some app in the same niche they could find useful.

2. Create a service related to your app

This will take a bit more work than promoting someone else’s service but the pay is a lot higher.
If you have an app with motivational quotes, workout exercises or dietary tips you can evolve this further. You gain some authority with your app that easily can translate into paying customers for your services.
If you have an app that counts calories you can offer to provide meal plans to your users.
Link your app users to a website where you provide and explain your services.

This works for other niches as well, be creative!

3. Offer to program their app ideas

A bit similar to the above but for coding apps.
Most people using an app don’t have the skills to create one themselves. You obviously do!
If they have an idea for an app, create it for them.
Make a page in your app that contains a phrase like “I can help you create an app” and a link to your website.

4. Sell merchandise for your app

Have you seen a kid walking around with an angry birds tee or cap?
While that might be a pirate copy from Asia the creator make serious cash from his merchandise, some sources says about 50 percent of the sales.

Another company doing this is Evernote. They have a shop where you can buy t-shirts, coffee mugs, pens and much more.
Evernote makes money by selling products related to their app

This is a bit harder than the other ways. You are not exactly making money with your iPhone app alone. You need to set up a web shop and so on. I only recommend this if your app has an engaged community.

5. Sell in-app features

The app itself is free but to get some extra features the user has to make a purchase inside the app. One common example of this is in games. By purchasing in-app you can get more lives or unlock more levels. This concept is sometimes called freemium.

Duolingo, a great language learning app also have a store in their app.
The app enables you to learn languages from the basic to the advanced level for free.
In the store you can chose bonus skills to learn. Idioms and pick-up lines for example.
This is a great example since they offer tons of value for free but also offers a paid way to get a nice feature.

I’ve seen that some guided workout apps has a shop where you can buy new features.
These can make it possible to get an angry samurai motivating and guiding you instead of the standard voice.

By selling extra features some fitness apps are making money

I would definitely get some extra energy from having this guy screaming at me!

For meditation apps it could be the same principle but a Tibetan monk guiding you instead of an angry samurai!
This is probably the most effective way of making money with your iPhone apps.

6. Advertise in your app

While this isn’t exactly a new way of making money with your iPhone app it is however worth mentioning. By using ad networks you can start earning some cash straight away. Though not much it’s at least some monetary motivation to keep going!
This is really simple and something you can do while you figure out a better way to make money on your app.

7. Join a CPI network

By promoting other apps you will get money each time someone installs one coming from your app. The pay is pretty high. You can also use this to recruit more users to your own app!
While advertising for apps is not new, this pay-model is. Traditionally you will get a low amount per click (pay per click), now you get a larger amount per install.

8. Offer ad-free app for money

Most users would prefer not seeing ads, offer them this option!
By paying a small amount of money they get an completely ad-free app.
This is a nice strategy. Lure them in with a free app with great functionality but ads.
When they realize how great your app is they will not be hesitant to pay for removing the ads.

Simply create one free app and one paid. In your free app advertise for your paid app and other products as well if you want.

9. Free trial-version

Similar to the above example. Create one app that they can download for free and use x amount of days. After those days they will need to pay for the app. If using this method I recommend not having ads for anything else than your paid app. You could make some custom ads that will give them a reduced price for the paid app.

10. Create a web app or program of your app

Why only offer the app on iPhone? Firstly, make it available on Android as well.
When you’ve done this I’d recommend you make it a web app or program too. Those could be even more advanced than your app as well. This is indirectly a way of making money with your iPhone app since you can charge for the new platforms.
